We are malleable protoplasm in the hands of the universe,
Pretending we make choices of our “free will.”
Truth is, WE ARE NOT IN CHARGE—
as much as we’d like to think so,
And as much as it looks as if we are.
External conditions, enculturation, genetics, past experience,
Desire, peer pressure, spur-of-the-moment mood, ad infinitum
—Everything that makes us individual personalities—
Influences our choices more than does the Mind,
Where free will supposedly resides.
Choice and free will are a tangled mess.
In order to authentically choose of our own free will,
We have to be free to choose ALL possibilities.
That leaves the ability to make free will choices hanging out to dry,
Because we can’t even surmise all the possibilities.
In fact, we seldom have a free will choice at all.
You see, our Emotional Body is genetically programed
To automatically react to dangerous situations.
Somehow, that reaction-trigger has expanded territory
And now fires off at inconsequential trivia,
Like traffic, roaches, and rain—or no rain.
Really, now.
Until we voluntarily exercise our Will to master our REACTIONS,
Until we learn to stop, think, choose, then RESPOND,
We’re just malleable protoplasm.
That everything turns out just fine is a miracle,
…………………Even if we don’t like it;
…………………………………Even if it hurts a while.
And we always wonder, “How did that happen?”
