LIKE A SWITCH

TURNING ON THE LIGHT

Stunned silence filled the air.
Palpable disappointment swept through
The searchers kneeling around the fire.

Disbelief torched her heart.
She frowned.
That’s not true!

She saw dejection on all their faces,
Felt their misery rising in her gut,
Needed to expose the false leader.

It was time to break the rules.
She stood up.
All eyes focused on her.

A strange commanding voice
Issued from her mouth.
“That is not true!”

“It certainly IS possible
To become enlightened
In this lifetime.”

                       Goose flesh covered her body.               TRUTH.

“It’s as easy as flipping a switch, and I can teach you how.”

The leader advanced toward her.
Eager seekers surged around her.
“Tell us! Teach us!” echoed through the woods.

The leader disappeared into the circling crowd,
Swallowed by those who chose to defy death.
